Name: Sean Qi
Position: Second Year Representative
Year: 2nd year
Specialization: Undeclared (Most likely Finance, Accounting or Marketing)
Why did you join CMP?
I’ve always believed in the mantra of paying it forward. In high school, I was committed to giving back to my local community as a youth volunteer, and I wanted to do something similar here at UBC. As such, I decided to join the CMP team because it gave me an opportunity to help and empower my peers in a meaningful way.
Which course have you enjoyed the most at UBC?
COMM 202. I can safely say that I took away more from COMM 202 than any other course I took this year. The things I learned in COMM 202 – resume and cover letter building, along with interview skills – were legitimately practical and useful. I found myself directly employing everything I learned when I started applying for jobs and positions this year. The course was also very well-organized. If you are in first year, I highly recommend that you take COMM 202 if you have the chance.
What is your favourite food?
羊肉串 (Yang Rou Chuan). Google it.
What do you do outside of class?
One of my biggest hobbies is cooking. I consider cooking to be an art, and I enjoy pushing myself creatively with difficult recipes. I made a chocolate lava cake the other day, and I plan on baking a key lime pie soon. I also enjoy badminton, public speaking and watching reality TV shows like Survivor and Masterchef.
What is your personal motto?
“If you believe, you can achieve!”
What advice would you give to first year students?
Get involved! Because the Commerce Undergraduate Society at Sauder is one of the largest in North America, there are plenty of ways to get involved outside of the classroom. Attend workshops organized by CUS clubs, go to external conferences, compete in case competitions and apply for as many positions as you can. This is a great way to meet new people, network, learn new things and ultimately have fun!
