Name: Philip Ji
Position: VP Academic
Year: Third Year
Why did you join CMP?
I joined CMP because I saw the value it brought to students, and I wanted to help maintain the quality of the review sessions. On top of that, I really liked the tutors CMP brought in last year, so as VP academic, I am determined to help bring in top notch academic consultants!
Which course have you enjoyed the most at UBC?
Although it wasn’t my highest grade, I really enjoyed Comm 391 (Management Information Systems). Adam Saunders is absolutely amazing, and the amount of passion he has for teaching is crazy. If you take Comm 391, you have to take it with Adam Saunders!
What is your favourite food?
Chicken flavoured instant noodles #universitythings
What do you do outside of class?
Currently, I’m part of JDC’s development team which is a lot of fun! I met fantastic people who are crazy smart in the program. On top of that, I’m trying to work out (not working out too well), and I like to play LoL in my spare time.
What did you want to be when you were a kid?
When I was a kid, I wanted to be a chef! I always thought it would be amazing to be able to share your ‘master pieces’ with hundreds of people every day. I think it really started when I would watch my mom cook these amazing 5-6 dish dinners regularly; however, I quickly realized cooking was not be for me during middle school Home Economics.
What advice would you give to first year students?
Be open to new things. University is where you will truly discover who you are, and where you will meet your lifelong friends. For most of you, it’s a fresh start, and it will allow you to let go of your high school past. Join all the clubs that interest you, as they often allow you to meet other students with similar interests. Getting involved is also a fantastic way to meet new people, however you should be weary of getting ‘over involved’. Finally, utilize the resources at the BCC, as they provide interview help, cover letter / resume help, and much more.
